Project Title: Morphodynamic swash zone modelling
Doctoral Candidate: Quan NGUYEN
Project Description: This research project focuses on the development of a morphodynamic swash zone model. First, an existing boundary layer sub-model, originally proposed by Briganti et al. (2011), will be employed and evaluated against existing laboratory datasets, and its performance will be quantified. A variety of entrainment functions (for bed shear stress and bore turbulence) and sediment transport formulae will be tested using suitable datasets. Then, attention will be
given to the development of a boundary layer sub-model from first principles, emphasizing the bed mobility, the sensitivity of hydrodynamics, and sediment transport parameters on the boundary layer. The enhanced sub-model, designed for integration into a Nonlinear Shallow Water Wave Equation morphodynamic solver, will be validated similarly to the original, with the new terms assessed to achieve maximum efficiency. The optimal model can be validated using laboratory and field experiments.
